With over one week ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline, the Sacramento Kings are expected to open up trade talks for guard De’Aaron Fox, ESPN NBA insider first reported Tuesday.
Fox previously spoke about not signing an extension with the Sacramento Kings because of the progress he wanted to see from the team and organization.
“It has all to do with just the team, the organization,” Fox said on Draymond Green‘s podcast, The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis, in December. “Where are we going? I want to make sure that we’re in a position to try to win in the future because that’s ultimately what I want to do. I know I’ll make enough money regardless of where I play or what I do, I’m going to be fine. God forbid, knock on wood, you have a career-ending injury. But aside from that, I feel like I’m continuing to get better as a player every year.
“But for me, it’s, ‘Are we looking like we’re continuing to get better year after year and are we going to be able to compete at a high level?’ That’s all mine is. If we can show that this year, you sign an extension now. If not, obviously I still have another year, but that’s where my mindset is. At some point, will we be able to compete for a championship or really compete at a high level for a long time? That’s where I’m at. … At the end of the day I also want to win.”
The Kings are currently not in a position to compete, even though they have seen some newfound success under interim head coach Doug Christie. They are still 24-22, currently slotted as the No. 10 seed in the West–1.5 games ahead of the Golden State Warriors and 2.5 games ahead of the San Antonio Spurs for the final play-in spot.
Fox, 27, is averaging 25.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.55 steals on 46.8 percent shooting, including 32.4 percent from 3-point range and 82.6 percent from the free-throw line through 43 games. The one-time All-Star is now expected to be the big fish on the market, with respect to Jimmy Butler.
The tantalizing guard is setting himself up for a four-year max that could be worth nearly $230 million or, if he makes an All-NBA team, a five-year supermax ($345) next summer. One could assume that the team that acquires him–if one does between now and then–signs him to an extension (even though the team adding him can no longer sign him to a supermax).
But who will that be? Let us know in the comments!
