2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl: National Team Day 3 Practice Notes

That’s a wrap for the practices at the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl. We have day 3 practice notes coming in hot for the National Team. Sorry for no storytime today. Again, I’ll keep you updated when I do. Although, one last reminder that we have the film access this year and more content will follow. Think of this post as a flash takeaway from the Senior Bowl post sort of thing. Trey will also be making more Draft Busters appearances but that’s a story for another day. I’ll be talking plenty on the Senior Bowl whenever that recording happens.

Quarterback:

We’re positive Tyler Shough isn’t the best guy in this group? He looks really good. Making arm angles throws. Throwing ropes with confidence. Ball is getting to where it needs to be with plus zip. He has more than enough juice to get the ball to the opposite sideline. I can’t believe how good he looks on the move. Has been an injury case in the past but he adapted well and hit Arroyo in the end zone. To me, he’s been the best QB here regardless of which team.

Dillon Gabriel has accuracy on his side. Quick release and he does get the ball where it should be. Have to give him that. Times he holds onto the ball too long and doesn’t trust it. I’m not sure if it’s the size and he can’t see but it could be part of it. Dirted a ball in team portion on what would have been a score to Tez. A lot of overthrows. One gets picked by Nebraska on a missed throw intended to Pitt.

Taylor Elgersma is third in the rotation for everything. He gets the last rep which should tell you a lot. Doesn’t throw a terrible ball in terms of it not being a lame duck out of his hands. One target to Illinois wasn’t even close and could have been a score. Horrible in red zone stuff. He’s closer to throwing it in the stands than actually in the end zone. He can’t do a thing. Taking sacks in team period.

Running Back:

Ollie Gordon II got pancaked by Jeffrey Bassa trying to block. Concerning because V Tech blocked Bassa well. Then he gets blown by his Oklahoma State teammate. We can talk about how big he is all we want but he doesn’t play like it. Never see any of the wow knee bend stuff to adjust to holes in team period either.

Woody Marks had a big run in team period but went to make a move and tripped over himself. That sums him up pretty well. He can do some things but there’s no special here.

Donovan Edwards didn’t look like a liability blocking. Decent rep against Minnesota.

LeQuint Allen Jr looks capable as a pass catcher. Had a touchdown in team stuff. Blocking was meh. Not a slug. Has some movement skills. Can get open in passing downs.

Damien Martinez did a nice job blocking 4. Feet looked good in the team period run. Can make cuts and the power is going to be there. He might be faster than you think too. I don’t see a slug.

Wide Receiver:

Xavier Restrepo shook 12 out of his shoes in red zone for a win. Has another win later. Has smoothness and fluidness on his side. He’s a dude. Not a twitched up dude but a dude. Route running is there. Can tell he plays with an edge and cares.

Jaylin Noel had a bad drop on a two point play. Didn’t see much from him that impressed me on the entire day. Did he make a play the entire day?

Jaylin Lane beat Florida State in red zone for nice score.

Tez Johnson can’t be covered. USC not even within striking distance. He’s a different gear and level from this group. Wins again against Jonas Sinker in team red area. Stupid quick feet. He’s the best in this group and it’s not close. He’s exceeded my expectations. He needs to be taken seriously.

Pat Bryant II stinks. He can’t beat anybody. He does this thing where he does 800 moves in the same spot while not covering ground. When he does win he’s covered at the same time.

Tight End:

Terrance Ferguson looks good again. Caught a score against Keondre Jackson. Times he looks a bit clumsy and ends up on the ground too much but mostly good.

Harold Fannin Jr. blew by Sebastian Castro pretty well to close practice but dropped the ball. Mostly wasn’t an issue for him this week though.

Elijah Arroyo total freakshow. Can’t be covered. Clear win against Virginia in the red area. Nobody can cover him. Dare me to put him at TE1. You won’t.

UCLA’s Moliki Matavao is so bad. I have no idea what the point of him is. Play everybody except him during the game, please.

Offensive Line:

Josh Conerly Jr. rebounded nice today. Just looks more comfortable on the left. Clear win against Alexander who has made a name for himself. Has another clear win against Okie State. Wouldn’t say he totally dominated everything but he’s been very solid.

Aireontae Ersery stone walled Central Arkansas. Can’t wait to see him at the Combine. Would say he’s passed the test here but I’m not counting the chickens here either. I’m not quite sure what type of athlete he is yet.

Anthony Belton keeps doing a good job. Pushed 17 around right by around the corner. Had another win against Central Arkansas.

Wyatt Milum just hasn’t looked good. Never gets his hands on guy and rocks them. Doesn’t look that strong. Not a crazy bender either. He beat Iowa but Iowa been sucking. Farmer totally outpowered him.

Grey Zabel is damn good. Beat up Josh Farmer. Has an anchor quality to him. Stays in front every time. It takes a serious effort to push him back.

Rivers with a bunch of whiffs today. He looked TERRIBLE. Couldn’t find a win today. Ty Robinson made him look like a girl hand fighting. You seriously can’t find a win today. He lost to everyone. Sometimes not even making contact like he’s a girl.

Ozzy Trapilo comes out of this week a winner. Hard to find a rep he lost. 6-foot-8 and knows how to use it without being clumsy. He can play.

Defensive Line:

Donovan Ezeiruaku and Mike Green are done practicing. After what they showed on the first two days, it’s understandable.

Josh Farmer lost against NDST but did the same thing he’s been doing against mostly everyone else. All bull.

Darius Alexander is building momentum. Rocked back USC pretty good. Went right by Rivers. Has a really nice first step. Lost against Conerly but is lighting it up otherwise. He’s got a jolt to him at first contact. He’s been fantastic. Made big time plays in team period. Probably two sacks he should have had.

Aeneas Peebles went right by Rivers. Has some sudden quickness. Another win against USC.

Yahya Black stinks. He’s a zero.

Junior Tafuna went right by West Virginia. Beats Rivers.

Ty Robinson aces the power department. He’s a good player.

Landon Jackson clear win against Boston College. Finally won a rep. Finally building momentum. Rocked a tight end back in team period that was impressive. By far his best day. Looks like a different player compared to the start of the week. Played the run well in team too. He got better each day. Growth matters and he did just that.

Jamaree Caldwell is meh. Never wowed.

Oluwafemi Oladejo passes the motor test. Clear win against USC. Plays with an edge. You’re going to have to beat him cause he doesn’t quit. Speed right by Minnesota.

Cornerback:

Azareye’h Thomas you can tell he can kinda cover but he’s not alien mode. People can beat him and create separation. Felton got him in the team red zone stuff. He’s lost plenty. Most reps look the same. He’s good for about 2-3 seconds but if the play extends then he’s done. It was also very matchup-dependent. Against bad guys, he won. Against good guys, he didn’t hang in there. Against Washington State guy who was so irrelevant and so bad he wasn’t even worth talking about, Thomas can do this. What do they call that route, by the way? Cute route? Looks like a noob trying to dance on Tik Tok while accomplishing nothing.

Tommi Hill breaking up a ball covering Noel. Finally did something. Got cooked by Higgins the other day but can handle the other Iowa State guy. Came away with a pick in the red area against Gabriel. Was doing a good job on Fanin to make the pick. Kept up with Lane pretty well to close practice. Ditto for Illinois. Got nicked up on the very last rep but doesn’t look like a serious injury.
