Stephen Curry: There is a responsibility to keep Warriors in good space long-term

It’s well-known that the Golden State Warriors are in search of an extra star to pair alongside Stephen Curry after losing sharpshooter Klay Thompson this offseason.

We don’t know who that will be outside of it not being Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler, the hottest name on the trade market–even though he has his sights set on Phoenix. Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vucevic and Brooklyn Nets forward Cameron Johnson are two names that have been floated, which is more attainable than the Warriors shelling out north of $45 million in contracts.

Nevertheless, Curry needs some extra help, and the current supporting cast hasn’t quite provided enough. The Warriors are desperate, though Curry mentioned earlier this week that there’s still a obligation to not fracture the future while trying to swing for the fences.

“Desperate trades or desperate moves that deplete the future, there is a responsibility on keeping the franchise in a good space (long-term) and good spot when it comes (to) where we leave this thing when we’re done,” Curry said, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic. “Doesn’t mean that you’re not trying to get better, doesn’t mean that you’re not active in any type of search.

“If you have an opportunity where a trade makes sense or in the summer where free agency makes sense. You want to continue to get better. Nobody wants to be stale or be in a situation where you are passing up opportunities. But it doesn’t mean you’re desperate (and) flinging assets all around the place (just because) you want to do something.

“If there was a situation that made sense for our team, I’m pretty sure we’d know about it. That’s how we’ve always operated. That’s the expectation now until Feb. 6.”

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr shared a similar sentiment when speaking with reporters:

“We want to maintain what has made us the Warriors, what’s made us into this organization,” he said. “I think that manifests itself in a lot of different ways. And one of those ways is don’t do anything crazy. Let’s maintain the integrity of the operation. I think everybody is on board with that and aligned with that. We all want the organization to do as well as possible going forward. And we all agree it would be really irresponsible to jeopardize the future to take a wild stab at something.

“Mike (Dunleavy Jr.) is incredibly sharp. We have a great organization. I have no doubt Mike will navigate it, and I’ll help any way I can. We’ve got to try to give Steph every chance he has to perform. That’s really important these last few years, whatever that means. But you don’t give away the future.”

The Warriors aren’t necessarily in a position where they have to trade multiple picks–they have firsts available to trade from 2025-28–or at least one of Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski to swing for the fences. We know they likely won’t do the latter–even though he’s regressed–and they would have to find a suitor willing to pay the former, who’s a restricted free agent this offseason.

Golden State, however, is in a difficult spot–both within the standings and financially. It doesn’t have enough to compete with Oklahoma City, Boston or any of the other contenders leaguewide, nor do I think there’s a move available that will put them in that conversation. But it also doesn’t have much maneurvability with being hard-capped below the first apron–which it’s less than $600K from.

The Warriors are a move away from being at least one more move away. Will it complete the first step of the process over the next three weeks? We’ll have to wait and see.
