One day away before the unofficial start of trade season, the Brooklyn Nets have traded Dennis Schroder to the Golden State Warriors for De’Anthony Melton and three second-round picks, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Saturday.
NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line first reported that a deal between the two sides was in “advanced discussion.”
Schroder, 31, has been exceptional for the Nets to begin the season. He’s averaging career most in assists (6.6), 3-point percentage (38.7), free-throw percentage (88.9), effective field goal percentage (54.2) and true-shooting percentage (58.8), tallying 18.4 points and 3.0 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 33.6 minutes per game.
The Warriors have recently struggled with creation outside of Stephen Curry. Schroder immediately becomes their second-best creator, elevating the team’s floor offensively. He’s small, but he’s also good at the point-of-attack which helps take pressure off Andrew Wiggins, arguably their most reliable POA defender.
Melton signed a one-year deal with Golden State and is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. Thus, money will be coming off the books for the Nets after this season. Schroder’s $13.0 million will also be off the books, so Golden State gets a clear upgrade in terms of production while the Nets get (some?) draft capital.
The Nets have played away above their head to begin this season, going 10-15 despite having the 8th-worst adjusted NET Rating and the second-easiest schedule, according to Cleaning The Glass.
Schroder was one of the players that the team was expected to consider trading ahead of the deadline. Others include Dorian Finney-Smith, Ben Simmons and Bojan Bogdanovic, among others.
