Consider this my small victory lap, I told y’all to put some respect on Derek Carr. Welcome to the party if you’re just arriving. (John Rieger/USA TODAY Sports)

I Told You About Derek Carr He’s Awesome

About two months ago, I wrote that Derek Carr was incredibly overhated. When Jon Gruden tore down the Raiders in 2018, Carr’s name was one of the first to come to mind with blame. To put it simply, Carr was getting blamed for things that he had no control over. He has no way to control his defense being terrible in 2020. Carr is great at controlling what he can control and doing what he can do. Carr has played great against the Ravens and a Steelers defense that made Josh Allen look ordinary. If that doesn’t tell you enough, here’s some more proof.

Through two weeks of the 2021 NFL season. Derek Carr is completing 66.67 percent of his passes, has 817 passing yards (408.5 per game), four touchdown throws, only one interception, a 104.1 passer rating, and he’s averaging 8.8 yards per attempt. The numbers are great, but Carr also has made a great number of big plays. He’s always had the physical talent to do it, now he’s actually doing it!

Through two games, Derek Carr has 12 passing plays of 20 yards or more. That’s six per game, and over a 17-game season, that’s projected to be 102 passing plays of 20 yards or more. To put into perspective how ridiculous that is, Carr’s career-high is 54 of those plays. That occurred in 2019 and 2020. Right now, he’s on pace to almost double that with only a single extra game. To put it simply, that’s nuts.

Derek Carr is proving yet again that he was overheated and underrated. Hopefully now Raiders fans won’t be idiots and will actually appreciate Carr for the great quarterback he is.
