The Titans Should Trade Derrick Henry

It’s time to rip the bandaid off and everything must go. The Titans have already started the rebuild process by trading franchise icon Kevin Byard to Philadelphia. Now it’s time to do the same with Derrick Henry. The former Alabama running back has been a good soldier in Tennessee and now it’s time to reward him by sending him to a contender.

The Titans were never contenders. This time I think they’re actually acknowledging it. You’re going to see a lot of Malik Willis and Will Levis over the next few weeks as Tennessee figures out which young pieces to build around. At the running back position, the Titans already have their guy with Tyjae Spears. I was very high on Spears coming out of Tulane and he’s averaging 5.5 yards per carry during his brief NFL career. It makes all the sense in the world to turn the keys over to him.

Henry, 30 in January, is in the final year of his contract with the Titans. He’s set to hit the open market next year. Tennessee needs to get something for Henry while they still can. They likely won’t receive anything more than a late round comp pick if Henry bolts in free agency. Why not take the Byard approach and try to extract two picks for Henry?

The eye test doesn’t lie. Henry isn’t the same guy anymore. Henry sports a 44.9% rushing success rate which would mark the worst rate of his career. As he’s slowed down, he’s also close to a zero in the passing game. Not saying Henry can’t help someone but he’s no longer carrying a team like he did when the Titans were the one seed a few years ago.

It’s time to make this happen. There is no point in Henry sticking around Tennessee to watch this team continue to crumble. Send him to a contender so we can enjoy the final stage of his career.
