Howie Roseman pulled off another masterclass Monday, as the Philadelphia Eagles have acquired Pro Bowl safety Kevin Byard from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for Terrell Edmunds and draft compensation, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport was first to report.
It’s a move that comes at a perfect time for an Eagles secondary that has been plagued with injuries to start the year. Now, they fill a big hole in that secondary in a major way, having to give up very little in the process.
I don’t know who in the Titans organization Howie Roseman knows, but it’s clear at this point he has an inside man there. I don’t see how else a team would allow itself to be fleeced so many times. We all know the A.J. Brown trade and how bad it’s going for the Titans, leading to their general manager being fired.
Now Roseman has come back to the Titans, this time to steal their Pro Bowl safety; the Titans are in a weird spot and likely to start a rebuild within the next couple of years.
Worst of all, they didn’t really get anything in return. Terrell Edmunds likely won’t be on the team in a few years and the odds of a 5th- or 6th-round pick making the roster is minimal.
For the Eagles, it’s a move that upgrades an injury-riddled secondary. Reed Blankenship, Eli Ricks and Darius Slay have been banged up, with guys like Avonte Maddox set to miss the rest of 2023. It has quickly become an issue for the Eagles, who were struggling to find depth.
Barring any injury, the Eagles will have one of the better safeties in the league. He may be past his prime at age 30, but he can still provide great value for the Eagles’ defense. The other key thing has been the health of Kevin Byard; during his eight-year career, he has played in every game possible except his rookie year.
The rich get richer and Roseman continues to show why he’s one of the best general managers in the NFL.
The Titans, on the other hand, continue to confuse me. They go out and sign DeAndre Hopkins, signifying they want to win now, but then start selling off “key” pieces on the team in an attempt to get draft picks.
They seem to not know what direction they want to go in, which is just about the worst place you could be in. Either embrace the tank or put some real effort into trying to make a winning team. For now, I won’t complain about them giving away all their best players to the Eagles.
The Eagles have yet to truly look like themselves. It’s not all because of the injured secondary, but it certainly hasn’t helped. Help has now arrived, as the Eagles look to make another run for the Lombardi Trophy.
