On this day, 11 years ago, we were treated to one of the most memorable, and infamous, moments in NFL history, appropriately nicknamed the “Butt Fumble.”
Flashback to Nov. 22, 2012: The New York Jets were hosting the New England Patriots during the nightcap of the Thanksgiving day games. After a miscue behind him, quarterback Mark Sanchez literally ran into the butt of his offensive linemen, knocking him back and causing him to fumble, which was recovered by Steve Gregory and brought back for a touchdown.
This would be a part of the 21 points the Patriots would go on to score in just 52 seconds.
The Butt Fumble is one of those moments where we all most likely remember where we were. I remember being at home, watching the game with my Dad, a massive Jets fan, watching him be dejected to begin the game as the Jets were down 14-0 at this point.
When the Butt Fumble happened, he grabbed the remote and simply turned the game off and got up to do other things. This likely reflects how Jets fans felt across the globe after that.
This play will live in infamy forever, as it is a yearly reminder during the Holidays and will be played on highlight tapes every year. Even if you aren’t a huge fan of Thanksgiving, like Chris Russo, you can look back on this moment and I guarantee it will bring a smile to your face.
I hope, at this point, Jets fans can look back on this legendary moment and have a laugh because I know the rest of the NFL certainly will.
