In what is becoming a very weird week for football, highlighted by the Bishop Sycamore-ESPN saga, South Carolina is looking to snag some headlines too. According to the South Carolina football depth chart, Zeb Noland is QB1 for the Gamecocks’ opener against Eastern Illinois on Saturday.
Noland was added to Shane Beamer’s coaching staff this year. The now sixth-year player had eligibility remaining and when quarterback Luke Doty went down with a foot injury in the spring, Noland stepped up. The Gamecocks QB1 started his career at Iowa State before transferring to North Dakota State where he was the backup to San Francisco 49ers rookie Trey Lance.
According to ESPN, Beamer and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield had joked about the possibility of Noland earning the starting quarterback spot for the team. That joke is now a reality. Redshirt senior Jason Brown, a transfer from St. Francis (PA), will serve as the backup to the former NDSU quarterback. Both players shared first team reps, with Noland edging out Brown for the starting position.
During his seven game spring season with the Bison, Noland threw for 721 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions. This football season just keeps getting better and better.
