Cam Newton has been released by the New England Patriots. After signing with the team a couple of months before the 2020 season, the former MVP’s time comes to an end in Foxborough. Without Cam Newton, rookie Mac Jones assumes the starting quarterback role. Boston Globe’s Jim McBride broke the news this morning.
Many people like myself did not see this coming but Belichick has shown he will do whatever it takes to better the team and if releasing Cam Newton was the answer, I am not going to start questioning “The Hoodie” now. Newton, by all accounts, bought into the New England system and looked to be a leader in the locker room. Newton’s saga with COVID-19 may have been the final nail in the coffin as Cam essentially gift-wrapped the starting position for Jones. Last week Newton missed five days of practice due to a misunderstanding of the COVID rules which gave Mac Jones a week’s worth of first-team reps. Jones dominated some of those practices and impressed fellow teammates.
As for Mac Jones, I think I have come full circle on the former Alabama QB. Right after the Patriots drafted him I was critical of his arm and lack of athleticism. Today I will eat my words and say that Jones has impressed in the preseason and training camp. Jones looks calm, he is decisive and the accuracy we saw in college has followed him to the NFL.
I would have liked the Patriots to name Jones the starter and keep Cam to use in certain offensive situations. I think Newton has some value down near the goal-line where you can essentially use him as a running back. The quarterback room in New England consists of Jones, Brian Hoyer, and Jarrett Stidham so let’s pray nothing happens to Jones anytime soon. New England is going with the rookie, will Chicago and San Francisco do the same?
Sign me up for Mac vs Tua in week one.
