For our SimBull NFL Division analysis, we head to the chaotic NFC North. Between Aaron Rodgers’ uncertain status as a Packer, the Bears drafting quarterback Justin Fields, the new-look Vikings, and the middling Lions, the division remains unique in the NFL. Which team is the best buy in the NFC North?
The Detroit Lions at #4 should surprise no one. They traded for a worse QB in Jared Goff and lost their best weapon, Kenny Golladay, to the New York Giants in free agency. The franchise lacks a clear direction, and until the Lions figure that out, they are not a worthwhile investment. Their price is relatively low, but in this case, the $27 cost is money better spent elsewhere.
Before you close this article and bash me on Twitter, consider Rodgers’ situation in Green Bay. Simply put, he doesn’t want to remain with the team. Rodgers would routinely change his HEAD COACH’S plays at the line when he disagreed with them, so when he says he is done with the Packers, he should be taken seriously. He wants to be traded and if he isn’t, there is a distinct possibility that he retires. Considering the fact that no one behind Rodgers at QB is worth mentioning for the Packers, Green Bay has a choice: Aaron Rodgers’ way or the highway. Their stock is too high for this much uncertainty, so I’m out on this one.
The Vikings may be second on this list, but that does not make them a prudent investment. Kirk Cousins is the definition of mediocrity, and the team’s ceiling with him at the helm is a total question mark. First-round exit from the playoffs at best? Far from ideal. It’s not a horrible investment given the price, but in all likelihood, investing in mediocre Minnesota won’t lead to anything more than disappointing returns.
Careful examination of a division can yield a hidden gem and in the NFC North, the Chicago Bears are that gem. At $30, the Bears are an excellent investment, and Bears GM Ryan Pace might have redeemed himself by trading up to select QB Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL draft. A year ago, they were rolling out Nick Foles or Mitch Trubisky for every game, but Fields will be Chicago’s starter sooner or later. If you believe in Fields, believe in this investment. This might be Chicago’s lowest price point for a while, so don’t sleep on it.
