What are the Red Sox going to do with Chris Sale? If Chaim Bloom had half a brain, he would have taken advantage of the opportunity to dump his contract to another team. Luckily, Bloom is gone now but the Sox still need to figure out what they’re going to do with Sale moving forward.
For starters, maybe I’m making something out of nothing. Sale is still under contract so maybe I should just assume Boston will proceed as normal. As long as Sale is healthy, he’s going to be in the rotation. I’m just not sure that’s the correct approach.
Just because the Sox are desperate for starting pitching doesn’t necessarily mean that they should just act like everything is okay. Let’s just be honest about what’s going on here, please. The guy is never healthy.
Sale missed all of 2020.
He made 11 total starts in 2021 and 2022 combined.
Last year he made 20 starts but also wasn’t effective posting a 4.30 ERA.
Why would we just ignore all of this?
First and foremost, the Sox should aim to keep Sale healthy above anything else. Why would we pretend that this guy has the ability to pitch 200 innings? Can the organization at least try to get creative?
Maybe use Sale as a lefty opener?
Maybe a bridge starter where a righty opener starts the game for him?
Something anything to take some of the load off makes all the sense in the world. The only thing that is preventing this is Sale’s ego. Nothing less, nothing more.
The Red Sox should be desperate for starting pitching and they should operate this offseason as if Sale isn’t even on the roster. Whatever they get out of Sale should be considered gravy. I’m just simply asking if the club is going to stop pretending otherwise.
