Chaim Bloom was fired today and absolutely deserved to get canned. No question about that. If you’re someone that believed Bloom should have kept his job, this next detail that I’m about to share with you will definitely change your mind. It turns out that Bloom had the opportunity to dump Chris Sale at the trade deadline last year and passed on the opportunity.
Red Sox insider Rob Bradford had the story on WEEI:
Few things from me.
A: This is just a guess but the team that really makes sense here is the Mets. New York was in go-for-it mode and Steve Cohen has been the most irresponsible owner in the league in terms of spending money. My guess is the Mets offered to take Sale and his entire contract on for low-level players. I could be wrong but they make the most sense.
B: I’m sorry but this is unforgivable. How many guys did the Red Sox get outbid on? They had to trade Mookie Betts because of the tax bill, right? What about when they got outbid on Zach Eflin? I can name names forever. Xander Bogaerts, Nathan Eovaldi, JD Martinez, Kyle Schwarber, etc. Chris Sale is a damaged asset and if there was a chance to offload him, imagine how many players the Sox could have kept instead?
C: How terrified is this guy of making trades? Is he willing to accomplish anything? Two consecutive trade deadlines of nothing. The guy has such a clam between his legs it’s so embarrassing.
