Prosecutors Want 9-Year Sentence For Dani Alves

Spanish state prosecutors will seek a nine-year prison sentence for the former Barcelona and Brazil right-back Dani Alves, according to sources from EFE.

Alves will face trial in Spain after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman in the bathroom of a Spanish nightclub in December of 2022. Along with the nine-year prison sentence, prosecutors are also requesting that Alves be prohibited from having any contact with the victim for 10 years following his sentence and for an additional €150,000 to be paid to the victim. A trial date has yet to be set.

The sexual consent law in Spain takes into consideration a wide variety of crimes including sexual groping, online abuse and rape. The maximum sentence for rape in Spain is 15 years.

The 40-year-old Brazilian has been held in custody in Barcelona without bail. He was indicted by an investigative judge in August, and the court declared that there was enough evidence to hold a trial earlier this month.

Alves has denied any wrongdoing and claims that he had consensual sex with the alleged victim. He has requested to be freed on multiple occasions, but each request was denied due to Alves being considered a flight risk. Alves has reportedly offered to turn in his passports and wear a tracking device until the trial takes place. His requests have still been denied, however.

Alves is one of the most decorated soccer players in the history of the game. He has won 42 titles throughout his career, including three Champions League titles, and took part in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar last December.
