Some people are just better as coordinators. Maybe Robert Saleh gets another head coaching opportunity down the line with a team that isn’t as dysfunctional as the Jets. However, after a failed tenure in New York (where he absolutely deserved to be fired) Saleh has rebounded nicely and will be taking his old job back with San Francisco.
Saleh, 45, is back with the 49ers and will be their defensive coordinator again.
Tom Pelissero over at NFL Network was the first to report the news:
Saleh interviewed for the Las Vegas Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, and Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching openings but didn’t land either one of those gigs. Maybe he becomes a head coaching candidate again in 2026 or 2027 but time will tell on that.
I’m sure Kyle Shanahan is thrilled. Saleh was his first DC hire with the 49ers and was there for three plus years (2017-2020). Demeco Ryans did a great job after but he got the Texans job. The coordinator hires that followed felt like a huge drop off. Steve Wilks was let go after one year. Ditto for Nick Sorensen. Saleh at least feels like someone who can get this 49ers defense back on track.
During the 2019 and 2020 seasons combined, the 49ers ranked second in yards allowed per play (4.9) under the tutelage of Saleh. If the 49ers can truly get back to that level, maybe they really can get back to Super Bowl contention.
