Houston Texans are looking to land Ryans as HC in the next few days
With head coaching jobs being filled, 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is most likely going to be hired by the Houston Texans, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
The former Texans linebacker, Ryans has been a part of the 49ers coaching staff as a defensive coordinator since 2021 and is one of the top candidates for a head coaching vacancy around the league.
Ryans has proved that he can command a stellar defense as shown with the 49ers for the past few seasons. This year, the 49ers were ranked the No. 1 defense in the entire league for the regular season in 2023. For opposing rushers, the 49ers allowed a minimal 3.4 yards per carry, ultimately leading to their success this season, even with injuries.
Ryans was drafted 33rd overall in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans after three years with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He became the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 2005. Ryans would later go onto play for the Philadelphia Eagles before ultimately getting a job with the 49ers in 2017.
With the second overall pick in this year’s draft, a young core, and building blocks to work with, it was a seemingly easy choice for Ryans to pick his former team.
It is not finalized yet, but with San Fransisco being eliminated from the playoffs, offseason antics will start for Ryans. If a meeting that was done today goes well, Ryans could be packing his bags to Houston and rejoice in a homecoming. According to Rapoport, a deal could be finalized Tuesday or Wednesday at the earliest.
