Report: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. not signing extension with Blue Jays ahead of 2025 MLB Season

Earlier this offseason, it was reported that the Toronto Blue Jays and infielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who will be a free agent next offseason, were in talks for an extension.

However, according to ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, Guerrero’s Monday deadline for a new deal was not met.

It was reported in early January that the two sides were far from an extension. Guerrero confirmed that buzz Tuesday via his translator, responding “no” to the question of whether the two sides were close.

Guerrero will undoubtedly be one of the top free agents on the market next summer–along with new Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker. The obvious top target is the Boston Red Sox, with whom he has expressed interest in signing. Other possible targets, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, could be the New York Mets and New York Yankees.

The Mets just signed Juan Soto for $765 million and have Steve Cohen flexing his muscles, so that’s more-than-possible; if we know anything about Guerrero, he would rather eat a spoonful of dynamite before signing with the Yankees, so I don’t think that’s a possibility unless they’re willing to pay up.

Guerrero will be entering his age-26 season in 2025. He’s coming off the second-best season of his career, sporting a .940 OPS (166 OPS+) with 30 home runs, 103 RBIs, 44 doubles (career-high) with 72 walks compared to 96 strikeouts. He’s not quite the slugger that Soto is, but he’s still one of the best young hitters in the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if his next contract begins with a “5” if he gets at least an 11- or 12-year deal, which is in the cards.

More players not wanting to take money from the Blue Jays–this time, it’s coming in-house. What do you think about this news? Let us know in the comments!
