After there was plenty of speculation about where he would go, veteran infielder Alex Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million with the Boston Red Sox last Wednesday.
It marked the end of a drawn out free-agent saga, and officially made the Red Sox a threat to win the AL East after being mediocre each of the last three seasons. The star third baseman recently opened up to reporters about his decision to sign with the Red Sox, which came less than a week before the first full-squad workout this week.
“I feel like I have a great opportunity to win here,” Bregman said this weekend. “Obviously, playing at Fenway is awesome. Playing for a city that not only loves winning, but expects to win. I like playing in those pressure-packed environments, and I feel like I got that here in Boston.
“I’m a winning player. This is a winning organization. Those players are winning players. We have winning coaches here. I plan on winning here. After talking with some of the guys over the last two days, I can see that there’s something special here, franchise players, veteran players, young players, all ready to get after it.”
For his career Bregman, who turns 31-years-old in March, has slashed .272/.366/.483 with a 132 OPS+ with one Gold Glove, two All-Star appearances and two World Series titles. In 145 games last season, he sported a .768 OPS (118 OPS+) with 30 doubles, 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, though he sported a negative K:BB ratio for the first time since 2021. He has an excellent eye with great bat-to-ball skills that will tailor him well in Fenway Park.
While he’s not only the coveted right-handed bat the team sorely needed, Bregman’s exactly the leader that the Red Sox clubhouse needed. Boston is oozing with young talent. To get over the hump, there needs to be a mix of good veterans, which he is. Bregman knows how to win because he’s been in plenty of locker rooms that win. The players will feed off that.
The Boston Red Sox had a tremendous offseason by adding Bregman and Garrett Crochet to the mix. We will see if they can parlay that into success in what appears to be a wide-open American League.
