If you are a New York Yankees fan and possibly hoped that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. would sign with your baseball team when he enters free agency in the 2026 offseason, assuming he did — you can kiss those hopes and dreams goodbye.
It doesn’t appear like the 23-year-old has any desire to sign with the Yankees, not now or ever.
“I like to play in New York, I like to kill the Yankees. I would never sign with the Yankees, not even dead,” Guerrero said in Spanish recently Dominican media personality El Dotol Nastra.
I’m not sure how much of his vitriol stems from Toronto having their playoff chances getting shot down by New York in late September, but the two-time All-Star has had his fair share of success against the Yankees throughout his career. That included a three-homer game in the Bronx on April 13 (through followed that up with a four strikeout games. Baseball, am I right??) of this season.
In 2022, the Blue Jays star slashed .260/.313/.521 with four doubles, five home runs and 13 RBIs against New York; in his career, over 65 career games, Guerrero’s numbers against the Yankees are .289/.346/.518 with 13 home runs, 41 RBIs with one stolen base. His .864 career OPS versus New York is his second-highest against any AL East foe, with the highest, by far, being against the Orioles (1.025 in 63 games).
Opinions and thoughts on respective teams change over time, especially in certain circumstances. Assuming he became a free agent, what if Brian Cashman — or whoever is in charge come 2026 — offered $400-500+ million over a span of 8-10 years? Would Guerrero automatically rule them out or give further consideration, assuming it was most money being offered?
It’s likely he ends up re-signing with the Blue Jays anyways, but it makes you wonder. Nevertheless, I respect having a grudge against any opponent, let alone a division rival — especially if it’s the Yankees.
