Red Sox DFA Yu Chang, Activate Trevor Story
The Red Sox actually have a professional shortstop in the lineup for the first time all season. After screwing up the Xander Bogaerts thing this offseason, the Red Sox got the next best thing. After undergoing elbow surgery earlier this year, Trevor Story is officially back. The Red Sox will DFA Yu Chang to activate Story onto the roster.
Maybe Chang can stick on the roster. Despite DFA’ing Christian Arroyo, nobody ended up claiming him so Arroyo is still with the Sox in AAA. Chang is a strong defender but hit just .162 with a .552 OPS in 39 games. The Red Sox obviously made their choice and opted to keep Pablo Reyes instead. Pretty understandable given what Reyes did yesterday. Good timing given Story was being activated today.
Story is batting third and playing shortstop in his return to the Red Sox. Reyes will likely be the backup infielder. Luis Urias is the new second baseman. Story’s return is obviously huge if the Sox have any prayer of getting into the postseason. Story now becomes the 7th different player to suit up at shortstop for the Red Sox this year. That should tell you everything you need to know about how it’s been in year one after Xander Bogaerts left town.
The former Rockies infielder will look to improve upon a poor 2022 season. Story, 30, posted a career-worst batting line of .238/.303/.434 with 16 homers. The sad part is even those numbers are a huge upgrade over what the Red Sox have been getting out of the position in 2023.
