Chaim Bloom Continues To Prove He’s Not A Big Market General Manager

When someone tells you who they are, believe them. We have more than enough evidence when it comes to Chaim Bloom. The Red Sox president of baseball operations continues to prove over and over again that he’s not built to run a big market club. After another dud at the trade deadline, it’s past time to do what should have been done a long time ago.

Chaim Bloom needs to be fired so that he can run a club like the A’s. He’s not built to run a club like the Red Sox.

It was deja vu all over again. Another stinker at the trade deadline with the big league team stuck in the middle. That’s going to be the Red Sox over and over again until they hire a big boy that actually wants to win. As I wrote in my trade deadline primer, I still thought the right course of action was to sell on rentals like Adam Duvall and James Paxton. At the same time, Boston should have been on the hunt for controllable MLB-caliber starters.

Bloom didn’t accomplish anything. It was the same old nonsense again. How many hours do you think he spent on getting the Luis Urias trade done? A guy that’s hitting .145 on the season and was immediately sent to AAA. As if the Red Sox don’t have enough organizational depth at AAA, to begin with. The year before, the only trade they make was to acquire Eric Hosmer who was gone midway through the following season. The same cheese will probably happen with Urias given the depth Boston already has at second base.

Bloom has tipped his hand. Now it’s time to believe him. Do yourself a favor and go look at the Red Sox roster. You will notice a trend. Bloom has not acquired a single player via trade on the big league roster. Not one outside of backup catcher Reese McGuire. No, the castoffs from the Dodgers in the Mookie Betts trade don’t count. No, Trevor Story doesn’t count either. If you ask Red Sox fans, they would speak unanimously in saying they would rather have Xander and Mookie still on the team.

What has Bloom really accomplished during his time in Boston? It’s one flukey ALCS appearance and a string of last place finishes. Three last place finishes if the Yankees heat up down the stretch. I’m sorry that’s just not good enough.

Again, I ask you this question. What has Bloom accomplished during his time with the Red Sox? It’s the same script over and over again. It’s bargain bin signings, waiver claims, and the continued focus on building up the minor league system. Dave Dombrowski was hired to build a winner and was fired when funds ran dry in the farm. Bloom has fixed the mess that Dombrowski left behind but can’t grasp the concept that he’s running a big market club.

If you needed more evidence, this is what Bloom said after the trade deadline.

“We were on the phone near constantly today and through a lot of yesterday just looking at all sorts of possibilities and just trying as much as we could to stay true to everything I’ve talked about,” Bloom said. “We really like what we’re building. You’ve seen it now. It’s not something we’re asking people to close their eyes and dream on. You’re seeing it more and more each night on the field, the core we’re building, what we’re building towards. Understanding that we’re underdogs this year right now where we are in the playoff odds, we just tried to stay true to that.

“Underdogs”

Nope. It’s disgusting that this guy continues to not understand that he’s in charge of the Boston Red Sox. The Rays are underdogs. The A’s are underdogs. Not the Red Sox. He’s shown you who he is. It’s time to believe him. Bloom needs to be fired and it’s something that should have happened already.
