Christian Arroyo designated for assignment by Boston Red Sox

The Christian Arroyo experiment is over in Boston after three years. With a crowded infield, the Red Sox designated him for assignment following the puzzling trade deadline by Chaim Bloom. In a corresponding move, the Sox called up Luis Urias from Triple-A. The infielder was an acquisition from Milwaukee ahead of the deadline.

Arroyo leaves Boston with a slash of .264/.306/.411 and a .716 OPS to go with 18 homers and 93 RBIs. He spent parts of four seasons with the team after joining during the shortened 2020 season.

The next team that picks him up will be his fifth stop in the majors following time with Cleveland, Tampa Bay and San Francisco before his time in Boston. There were a variety of factors that contributed to this move. Injury concerns, lots of depth in the infield and a poor stretch of play as of late all culminated into this.

His 2023 totals stand at three home runs and 24 RBIs to go with .241/.268/.369 averages and a .638 OPS. Urias is not doing great himself, with a .145 average and a .535 OPS. However, they’re clearly banking on a new environment to bring him new results at Fenway Park.

Arroyo had his moments, but could never put it all together over his three years in Boston. He had a career high .286 batting average in 2022, but injuries only allowed him to play 87 games. Had he found a way to stay on the field he would more than likely still be a Red Sox player.

However, Trevor Story will likely return in the near future, and Urias needs game time to have a chance to improve. Triston Casas and Rafael Devers are also important pieces to the corner spots. At 28-years-old, Arroyo is not a completely finished story in MLB, but might have to wait a while until his next opportunity.

Christian Arroyo has run out of luck with the Boston Red Sox. He has been designated for assignment. What do you think about the transaction? Let us know in the comments!
