Is Rachel Nichols Making A Return To Sports Media?

The DC area must really love Rachel Nichols. That’s all I know. NBC Sports is rebranding its entire DC network and rebranding it to Monumental Sports Network. Guess who is leading the charge…

I have no idea what Rachel Nichols has done to deserve an entire NBC Sports Network to be rebranded around her but somehow this is indeed the world we live in. Keep in mind, NBC Sports also features Bay Area, Boston, California, Chicago, Philadelphia, and SNY. This rebranding will be the first entirely built on one person.

“Some fun news: In addition to my role at Showtime Sports here in L.A., I’m going to be headlining a show on the new Monumental Sports Network, talking to the players, politicians & celebs that make my hometown one of the most interesting places in the world,” said Nichols. “So much sports coverage is being cut back these days; I love that Monumental is so enthusiastically expanding what fans get to see and experience. (Plus this means time with my beloved Washington Capitals) Can’t wait!”

If there is one lesson to be learned here, if you work for ESPN at some point you will always have a job. Not saying Nichols was ever bad at her job but what are we doing here? As of right now, Nichols is more famous for her ESPN exit than anything she accomplished while working there. Are we getting anything other than a five minute NBA monologue each show?

Apparently, one of the shows Monumental Sports will feature is called the “Rachel Nichols Project.” Talk about an ego, huh? Nothing like getting a network to back you and naming the show after yourself.

And you people think Trey has an ego? K…

Nichols will be tasked with covering sports, politics and entertainment in Washington D.C. After what Nichols said about Maria Taylor, are we positive we want her covering politics? We’re sure about that?

NBC Sports Washington is clearly struggling if they’re willing to take this path but that’s probably because the teams in town aren’t generating much fan interest. The Wizards, Commanders, and Nationals all suck right now. The Capitals have Alex Ovechkin but I highly doubt Nichols is going down that route since she’s an NBA talking head.

Maybe I sound like a hater but I have no idea how this works. Good luck to Monumental Sports. Time will tell how much people end up caring about this rebranded network.
