Panthers Sign Christian McCaffrey To Record Breaking Extension

Christian McCaffrey just got paid! Scared of paying running backs? The Panthers just told you to take the notion and shove it. McCaffrey didn’t just get paid, it was a record setting contract for the running back position. The new contract is worth $64 million over 4 years which would make MCC the highest paid running back in the history of the NFL.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:

Ezekiel Elliott still holds the record for the highest dollar amount when he signed a 6-year extension worth $90 million. McCaffrey’s deal is shorter in length but beats the average annual value mark. I would say the McCaffrey deal is better given the length is a lot shorter. Also factor in that Christian McCaffrey won’t turn 24 until June. This feels like a smart move by Carolina to lock up their 2017 first round pick far before they had to. He was only going to get more expensive the longer they waited.

Carolina has changed a lot within the past year. New head coach, new quarterback, but same old running back. Christian McCaffrey is the heart and soul of the Panthers. The entire offense runs through him. McCaffrey notched over 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in 2019 with 19 touchdowns. The former Stanford running back has become the identity of Carolina.

What will be interesting to see is if Carolina tries to limit his touches moving forward. McCaffrey had 287 carries and 116 receptions in 2019. I’m not sure how sustainable that is. Time will tell if Carolina decides to actually draft a backup running back in the 2020 NFL Draft because right now they don’t have one.
