Off The Ice
Off The Ice

It was another exciting week in hockey…on and off the ice. The Stars had a gnarly season opener against the Predators after a COVID-19 breakout, PLD was finally traded out of Columbus, Chicago won their first game of the season and Tony DeAngelo was more defensive on Twitter than he ever has been on the Rangers.

Tyler Seguin or death

On Friday, January 22nd, the Dallas Stars opened their season against the Nashville Predators. They happen to be missing their star centermen and alternate captain, Tyler Seguin. He went through surgery in November to repair a torn labrum in his hip. In Tyler’s absence, they defeated Nashville 7-0. Yes, you read that correctly. After missing the first 2 weeks of the season due to a facility-wide COVID outbreak, they won 7-0.

Signed Superstars

Earlier this month, Pierre-Luc Dubois signed a 2-year contract extension worth $5 million. Shortly after signing, he requested a trade out of Columbus claiming he wanted a bigger stage. On Saturday, he was traded to Winnipeg for Patrick Laine and Jack Roslovic. When asked about the difficulty of the trade, Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekäläinen said

“It wasn’t that difficult. We got the second overall pick from the same draft”

Laine was selected second overall in 2016 while Dubois was selected third. Shots fired, I see.

Long-Awaited W

Friday was also an exciting night for Chicago. After 4 consecutive losses, they finally got a tick in the win column. Was it against Detroit? Yes. But that doesn’t matter. This was their home opener. Kirby Dach and Alex Nylander were reportedly in attendance. Dach is out with a broken wrist he suffered at the World Junior Championships in late December. Nylander is recovering from a meniscus tear and surgery. Captain Jonathan Toews was not at the game.

We can see you, Tony

Just a couple of weeks ago I was talking about how Tony DeAngelo left social media. Well, he’s back with a burner account on Twitter. He thinks he’s slick but based on the tone and the wording and quick-to-jump-to-explicatives-when-someone-disagrees, points everyone in the direction of the man the myth the legend himself, Tony DeAngelo. The account owner was harassing fans and claiming the account was being hacked and that he could sue. Okay, NYRFan92360244.

Rapid Fire

Carter Hart’s defense doesn’t play very consistently in front of him and his poor stick took the heat. Colorado didn’t play very well in their second Anaheim game. If I’m Barry Trotz, I’m not starting Sorokin in Washington. Anthony Beauvillier left the game early on Sunday night, it’s not clear what happened exactly but his status will be updated before Tuesday’s game.  I’m really looking forward to the Tkachuk brothers playing each other in the North Division. Joe Thornton broke a rib and is out for 4 weeks. Leon Draisitl took a shot with less than a second left and the Oilers beat the Jets. And I don’t care that this is all hockey, Bill Belichick was a ref for that Packers game and you can’t tell me otherwise.
