The No Ring Chasing Rule In The New NBA CBA Is So Stupid
I don’t know how many fans are truly prepared for what’s to come but the new Collective Bargaining Agreement is so stupid for about 800 reasons. Today we hope to tackle one of the many flaws in the CBA. I understand why the new rule is in place that essentially bans ring chasing on the buyout market. I’d just argue that the rule is incredibly flawed and rule makers totally botched the execution.
So I should have clarified but I meant to say this regarding next year’s Heat team. Their above the second apron of the tax which means the Kevin Love signing just wouldn’t be allowed this time next year. You get the point. I get that we maybe want to prevent teams like the Warriors adding players on the buyout market for free (even though I disagree with even that premise). It is clinically and utterly insane that we would prevent an 8 seed team with seven undrafted guys in the lineup the inability to add more talent. Punishing smart teams doesn’t make any sense.
Furthermore, I’d argue that nobody should care about the buyout market. That adding restrictions to the buyout market is a bad idea for multiple reasons.
A: This is supposed to be entertainment. You want as many good / notable players on your TV as possible during the playoffs. To replace a cool veteran with a rookie because you’re not allowed to sign him is lame.
B: These vets are important for the room. The league is becoming younger and younger and you keep pushing these old guys out of the league. You’re going to get more and more situations like the Ja Morant gun incident. Having respectable vets in the locker room to dissuade those disasters is a very dumb move by the league. We need more mentors like Udonis Haslem. Not less.
C: Why did the players agree to this? Tell me why some of these guys don’t deserve rings. A guy like David West grinded for years on bad teams. Why can’t a guy like that be allowed to be a veteran presence for a young contender? Don’t you want to reward players that put in serious miles on bad teams?
D: I haven’t even gotten the best part. Some of these teams have never won anything! The Clippers wouldn’t be allowed to make the Russell Westbrook move. I’d argue that’s the antithesis of ring chasing but whatever. Why can’t the Clippers make a buyout add again? When is the last ring they have won?
It just doesn’t make any sense. I think the NBA is in real trouble with these new rules and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
