Mets to call up No. 1 overall prospect Francisco Álvarez

The Mets may finally be doing something right. With a one-game lead in the NL East with six to play, the team will be calling up a huge reinforcement. Catcher Francisco Alvarez, the number one prospect in MLB, will be making his debut Friday night.

Daniel Alvarez Montes of El ExtraBase was first to report the news.

With a pivotal three-game series starting Friday night against the Atlanta Braves, the Mets need all the reinforcements they can get. This series could very well determine the NL East champion, so any top prospect called up can make an impact.

The 20-year-old catcher is batting .260/.374/.511 with 27 homers this year between Double-A and Triple-A. While he could see some time behind the plate, the Mets are looking to have Alvarez compete for a DH spot. With Darin Ruf and Mark Vientos struggling, Alvarez could see himself on the playoff roster as well.

Alvarez joined the Mets in 2018 as an international free agent from Venezuela. The defense has never been the bright spot despite being a catcher. His 70-grade power however gives him an excellent shot at being in the lineup every day.

Because of the struggles of Ruf and Vientos, Alvarez has a prime spot of being the guy to hit lefties. He’s slashing .315/.424/.595 with eight home runs and 23 RBIs this season against left-handed pitching.

For a Mets team that didn’t improve well at the deadline, they’ve had to rely on the call-ups of top prospects. So far, Vientos has not been as promising as hoped, so the attention will turn to Alvarez.

The Mets are currently 98-58, with a one-game lead over the Braves for the division. The Mets once had an over 10-game lead in the division, but quickly collapsed in Mets fashion and now must fight for the NL East.

It’s going to be a crazy final week. But hey, that’s why the game of baseball is the best.
