It’s almost September! Do you know what that means for baseball teams? MLB rosters expand, allowing promising minor leaguers to be called up and given a shot in the show.
There is a lot of talent to be excited for. They could be mightily impactful especially for teams looking for a late playoff push or even be spoilers. Let’s take a look at it.
The Orioles have been perhaps the most surprising team in baseball. Nobody expected them to be as close as they are to a postseason berth. Grayson Rodriguez could provide the extra push needed to get there. The right-handed pitcher dominated AAA yet missed a good amount of time due to a lat strain.
He is currently rehabbing and is expected to be added to the MLB roster shortly. He’ll be accompanied by other young rookie standouts like Adley Rutschman.
2022 AAA Statistics: 5-1, 2.09 ERA, 0.839 WHIP
Yes, another Oriole. I can’t help it! They have the best farm system in baseball. This young stud is practically MLB-ready and could also make a huge impact in that lineup in September. Henderson is another high-caliber ballplayer who seems to blossom at every level of the minors.
2022 AA/AAA Statistics: .294/.414/.530, 19 HRs, 76 RBI
The Dodgers seem to be a complete team heading into the postseason. There is one thing that needs to be addressed, however, and that is pitching.
The team recently lost their ace Walker Buehler to Tommy John surgery and health concerns plague guys like Clayton Kershaw and bullpen pieces like Blake Treinen.
Bobby Miller could be the answer to LA’s prayers, joining the team as a versatile cog to both the rotation and bullpen. This hard-throwing right-hander may be the X-Factor for a deep playoff push. He commands the strike zone well. Although his stats haven’t been the best, the Dodgers have high hope this September.
2022 AA/AAA Statistics: 7-6, 4.34 ERA, 127 strikeouts, 1.206 WHIP
Look Ma, it’s the Rays being sneaky good again! Somehow someway, this scrappy team manages to always be in the postseason conversation. It’s as though a random group of castaways comes together to pull off the ability to be a good baseball team. Tampa Bay currently holds the top slot in the wild card race.
Someone who could absolutely benefit the team in a big way is righthander Taj Bradley. He could be a frontline starter but also help out their bullpen in some way. Bradley throws a decent fastball with good command, but his big-ticket item is his slider. He is someone to definitely keep tabs on for September.
2022 AA/AAA Statistics: 5-4, 2.59 ERA, 1.083 WHIP, 10 K/9
With catching being a major point of concern for the Mets, they need a spark. After all, the Mets are first in their division yet have the Braves and Phillies on their tail. New York has an exceptional team and is certainly looking to make a deep postseason run.
Francisco Alvarez will be vital to the Mets if called up in September. The combination of James McCann and Tomas Nido hasn’t worked at all. Mets catchers are collectively slashing .206/.251/.269 with three home runs.
The problem is solved by 20-year-old Alvarez, who hits and hits for power. He will be a mainstay of that Mets lineup for years to come and could help them reach a World Series for the first time since 2015.
2022 AA/AAA Statistics: .247/.359/.500, 24 HR, 68 RBI
