Max Muncy Is A Potential MVP And No One Knows It
Who is Max Muncy? He’s the quiet offensive hero for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season. Nobody really knew it or even expected it, but he’s a top-five player in the National League and perhaps the entirety of Major League Baseball.
Max Muncy doesn’t look like an impactful player. He’s stocky and almost looks to be out of shape, but produces perhaps the most gorgeous left-handed swing outside of Ohtani.
His stats don’t lie either. In an era dominated by sabermetrics and getting on base, Muncy does all that and more. He’s slashing a monstrous .278/.418/.549 resulting in a .997 OPS. He leads the NL in on-base percentage and walks with 59. On top of that, he has 21 homers and 57 runs batted in. He’s second in the Majors in WAR with 4.7.
This leads me to my point that Max Muncy is an MVP candidate so far. Sadly, the baseball world elected to have Freddie Freeman start the All-Star game. Don’t get me wrong, Freeman is having a solid year but nowhere within the realm of Muncy.
Max Muncy is not a household name and wasn’t when he was first called up. The Oakland A’s drafted him in the fifth round of the 2012 draft. He was called up in 2015 and didn’t make any impact whatsoever. Combined with 2016, he slashed a miserable .195/.290/.321 in 215 at-bats. Oakland released him.
Yet, the Dodgers saw something in him. His eye at the plate was something different. Los Angeles called him up in 2018 where he took off immediately. He crushed 35 home runs and slashed .263/.391/.582.
He became a mainstay in that lineup with other studs who other teams had given up on like Justin Turner and Chris Taylor.
Muncy could be in the ranks of first basemen like Jason Giambi at some point if he keeps it up. He’s not flashy, yet does what is more than expected from him. That’s an MVP in my book.
