When you think of the best coach in college football, who do you think of? Nick Saban? Dabo Sweeney? Baylor head coach Matt Rhule might not be in that class but he’s a hell of a coach. Matt Rhule is the best college football head coach you never heard of. For some reason, Rhule is flying under the radar and deserves more credit.

Rhule has shown the ability to be a program builder. Rhule’s first major coaching job came at the University of Temple. Rhule was the head coach of the program from 2013-2016. Rhule took over the program and won just 2 games his first year. The program was in shambles. In 2014, Temple improved to 6-6. His final two years, Rhule won 10 games each year. It was the first time ever in the history of Temple football that the program won 10 games in a season. Rhule also found a way to recruit. Players like Robby Anderson, Tyler Matekevich, Tavon Young, Matt Ioannidis, and Haason Reddick found their way into the NFL. Rhule turned around the program in a hurry.

Rhule took the Baylor job in 2017. The program was on the verge of getting hit with the death penalty after the Art Briles scandal. In Rhule’s first year with the Bears, Baylor won just one game. In 2018, Rhule found a way to win 7 games with a depleted roster. The man has proven that he turns around programs.

Don’t be surprised if Baylor winning 10 games a year again. Rhule is well respected enough to get a head coaching interview with the Jets. It’s time to start recognizing Rhule as one of the better head coaches in the sport.
