Los Angeles Rams sign Carson Wentz
The Los Angeles Rams have signed free-agent quarterback Carson Wentz, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
The Rams are currently dealing with injuries at the quarterback position. Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford missed Week 9 with a thumb injury. In his spot, Brett Rypien got the start. That did not go well as he went 13 for 28 with 130 yards and a touchdown. The score did not favor the Rams either as they lost 20-3 to the Green Bay Packers.
Rypien was waived as a result of the signing, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
It is expected that Wentz will serve as Stafford’s backup. With the Rams on a bye in Week 10, Stafford is expected to play in Week 11. That bye week will also provide Wentz with more time to adjust to the Rams’ offense.
Wentz, 30, spent the 2022 NFL Season with the Washington Commanders. In eight games, he threw for 1755 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The poor start led to the Commanders’ benching Wentz and cutting him in the offseason.
Wentz’s peak came in his career with the Eagles. Once he left Philadelphia, he struggled with the Colts and Commanders.
This is the first time in Wentz’s career that he has signed to be a backup. Previously, he hopped from team to team with the expectation of being the starter. That will not be the case in Los Angeles.
Despite being the backup, it would not be a shock for Wentz to see game action. Stafford has consistently dealt with injuries during the latter portion of his career. In 2022, Baker Mayfield was able to get first-team reps while Stafford was sidelined.
