When it was announced that Lionel Messi was coming to the MLS, you figured this was going to happen.
In his debut, the Argentine magician scored a beautiful freekick in the 94th minute that gave Inter Miami the 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup. It was a stunning goal that helped announce to the world that Lionel Messi had arrived in Miami.
While his free-kick goal was truly awe-inspiring, he was just getting started.
In his second game for the club, Messi, 35, opened the scoring against Atlanta United after making a perfectly-timed run behind Atlanta’s backline.
Less than 15 minutes later, he added his second goal of the game. He picked up the ball in the midfield, driving forward until playing the ball wide, and then finished the cutback laid on a platter by Robert Taylor.
He returned the favor later on, assisting Robert Taylor on Inter Miami’s fourth goal in the 53rd minute.
Inter Miami went on to win the game 4-0 and qualified for the Round of 32 play in the Leagues Cup, which will begin Aug. 2. They will face Orlando City, Houston or Santos Laguna.
That’s three goals and an assist in two games with two wins. Messi, who spent his previous two seasons with PSG, where he scored 21 goals and 20 assists, is on fire so far for Inter Miami. The GOAT has arrived folks. Make sure you enjoy him while he’s here.
