The Red Sox wanted Jordan Montgomery this offseason. Apparently, Montgomery wanted Boston too. It turns out that Scott Boras did what he always does… Pushed for every last penny and held his guys way into Spring Training. With middle-tier free agents like Montgomery, he overplayed his hand and probably left money on the table by not accepting Boston’s offer.
“I had a Zoom call with (the Red Sox), that’s really all I know. It went good,” Montgomery said Friday, per Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. “I don’t know, obviously Boras kind of butchered it, so I’m just trying to move on from the offseason and try to forget it.”
Montgomery ended up settling for a one-year deal with Arizona that comes with a vesting option. However, he’s pitching like trash and having a miserable season. Montgomery, 31, sports a 6.44 ERA this year in 19 starts. He’s been removed from the rotation to likely avoid the upcoming vesting option for $25 million.
This is the real truth. Boras needs to stop holding his guys into Spring Training. Blake Snell stunk it up for the most part this year too. These arms need Spring Training. If they’re not there, it ruins their whole season. We’ve seen it too many times. Boras’ reputation in terms of earning himself a check speaks for itself. When it comes to middle-tier free agents, the guy needs to start putting his ego to the side because he’s losing money for all parties involved. Holding them so long that they miss Spring and then pitch like trash can’t be the ideal strategy moving forward.
