Diamondbacks Sign Jordan Montgomery
Jordan Montgomery helped the Rangers beat the Diamondbacks in the World Series. Now he’s going to jump to the other side. Just prior to the start of the 2024 MLB Season, Montgomery has agreed to a contract with Arizona.
The deal with the D-Backs is a one year deal worth $25 million. There is a vesting option for a second season the following year. Jeff Passan at ESPN was the first to report the news.
Montgomery, 31, will now pitch for his 4th MLB team in three seasons. Montgomery was traded to the Cardinals as part of the Harrison Bader deal. Then St. Louis dumped him at the most recent trade deadline. A move that helped propel the Rangers to a title.
During the postseason, Montgomery pitched to a 2.90 ERA in 31 postseason innings. He was even better during the regular season with Texas sporting a 2.79 after the trade with the Cardinals. It should have been enough to secure a long term deal but MLB teams acted very cautious during the offseason.
Montgomery should have landed a better deal than this but will ink at least a nice chunk of cash for a one year stretch in the desert. Will this deal prove to be a smart one for Arizona? Remember, Montgomery was not hit with a qualifying offer but Arizona could slap one on him after the end of this new deal. It’s really a deal with very little risk. A nice piece of business by Mike Hazen and the rest of the front office with the Diamondbacks to jump in late here and steal a good player for a reasonable price.
