Red Sox Want Jordan Montgomery for The Right Price
The Red Sox’s offseason has been one for the books in all the wrong ways. Jordan Montgomery is and has been in Boston nearly all winter and have yet to sign him. The Red Sox need to jump at the opportunity that is staring them in the face. A team that is without a top-end starting pitcher and they are yet to make the necessary adjustments to address this fact by getting someone like Montgomery. President Sam Kennedy addressed reporters last week about the Red Sox’s spending.
“We have set parameters for him and he’s operating under those parameters,” Kennedy said. “I do not want to talk about specifics related to payroll and parameters because it does nothing to help us competitively.
“Look, I think the focus on spending is fair and reasonable given where we finished the last couple of years. We understand there’s frustration. The best way to turn that frustration around is to go out and win baseball games and have the focus be on our team and our players versus where we’re spending. There’s nothing I can say or do at this point in the offseason that’s going to make anybody feel great about what’s happened the last two years, so we’ve turned the page internally and we’re moving on to 2024.”
Understanding “frustration” is acknowledging the fact that the team needs reinforcements. Jordan Montgomery supplies that for this Sox pitching staff if they were to sign him. The Red Sox do in fact want Montgomery and he’s their top priority at the moment. According to Rob Bradford the Red Sox are playing the waiting game.
Boston Needs Pitching
Montgomery’s market ranges depending on who you’re asking. According to Spotrac, his market value is at $18.4 million annually; also predicting 6 year/$110 million for a contract. Other sites have a contract at around $150 million. Montgomery was terrific down the stretch for The Texas Rangers and was great at times in the postseason. Ultimately, helping capture Texas their first World Series Championship.
The Red Sox waiting for his market to fall can lead to possibly another name that could help the club pass them by once again. In Montgomery’s case, I can find it unlikely his asking price may drop significantly as of right now. Coming off a World Series victory and Boston coming off another last-place finish. Why would he drop his price for them? Without significant improvement, the Red Sox are in for a long season with the warzone that will be the AL East. Montgomery would make this team better and he knows that. If the Red Sox truly want him they better hope his price does indeed drop and soon.
