Joey Gallo Still Upset Over Time with Yankees

It’s been a year since Joey Gallo failed with the New York Yankees. He may have moved on to a new team with the Twins, but Gallo remains disappointed in how his time in the Bronx ended.

“I look back, and I’m sad about it,” Gallo said. “I really grew up a Yankee fan, and all I wanted to do was play for the Yankees. I think part of it, not that it was a problem, but I wanted so badly to do well there.”

Gallo was having an All-Star season in 2021 when the Texas Rangers sent him to the Yankees. Gallo has never been a guy to hit for average, but his time in New York absolutely stunk. In 140 games with the Yankees, Gallo batted .190 with 25 home runs, 46 RBIs, and 194 strikeouts. Eventually, the Yankees had enough and sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022.

Despite all of New York hating Gallo’s guts, the Yankees were where Gallo wanted to be. He grew up a fan of the team, which made the ending hurt even more.

“I really grew up a Yankee fan, and all I wanted to do was play for the Yankees,’’ Gallo said. “I think part of it, not that it was a problem, but I wanted so badly to do well there.”

There’s no real excuse as to why he failed so horribly in New York. Hitting in a Mickey Mouse park should increase your power numbers, but it caused Gallo’s to somehow dip. He did face a bit of bad luck with the shift since it wasn’t banned until after his time with the Yankees. Still, Gallo knows that was his one shot to make his mark in New York, and he most likely won’t get another opportunity.

“I’ll probably never have a chance to play for the Yankees again,’’ Gallo said. “That was my opportunity, and now I’m known as the guy who [f–king] sucked for the Yankees. That part is tough, and I have to live with that for the rest of my career and the rest of my life, really.”

He speaks the truth. Maybe it isn’t completely his fault, however. The Yankees have failed to field a competent left fielder, and they’ve already used nine different players in left this season. Perhaps there’s a curse in the Yankee outfield, or Gallo just really stinks.

Both are probably the case, but Gallo has found a rhythm this season with the Twins. Through the first half of the season, Gallo is hitting .186 with a solid .764 OPS, 15 home runs and 28 RBIs. He’s producing a 108 OPS+, his best since that 2021 season. Perhaps the Yankees take another look at Gallo with the trade deadline coming up because their outfield options suck.
