Joel Wolfe: Will Hatred Of Yankees Play A Factor In The Yoshinobu Yamamoto Sweepstakes?
Remember those comments that Brian Cashman had about Giancarlo Stanton? Do you also remember when Stanton’s agent Joel Wolfe ripped Cashman for those comments? Could the karma gods intervene and strike back against the Yankees? When it comes down to the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes, it’s hard not to think about.
For those that need a refresher (but please go click the links and support the site for the full story) Wolfe said this about Cashman and the Yankees organization.
“I read the context of the entire interview. I think it’s a good reminder for all free agents considering signing in New York, both foreign and domestic, that to play for that team, you’ve got to be made of Teflon, both mentally and physically, because you can never let your guard down, even in the offseason,” Wolfe said, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Guess who Wolfe represents this offseason…
It seems like every notable big market team is interested in Yamamoto. That includes the Yankees. Given the fact that Wolfe represents Yamamoto, would he sway the Japanese superstar away from signing with New York? Given how the Stanton drama unfolded earlier in the offseason, I don’t think you can totally just forget that it happened.
As I mentioned in a previous post, it probably helps that a team like the Red Sox have Masataka Yoshida. Ditto for the Mets with Kodai Senga. The Yankees have no counter for that if it means anything.
Everything is going to matter in the Yamamoto sweepstakes. The fact that Wolfe has a bone to pick with the Yankees is something worth monitoring as competition for Yamamoto’s services heat up.
