The Yankees are saving something for Yoshinobu Yamamoto

Brian Cashman and the New York Yankees are continuing to live in fantasy land. With the Yoshinobu Yamamoto sweepstakes underway, the Yankees are saving his favorite uniform number for him.

Yes, they’re really that confident that Yamamoto will be a Yankee that they have his number saved. Andy Martino of SNY reported Wednesday the Yankees have been saving the No. 18 for the past year; the number is considered the “ace” number in Japan.

This is a pretty desperate measure by the Yankees. I get it’s a respect thing towards Yamamoto, but I think the number of dollars he gets will be more important.

It’s also Cashman we’re talking about. The same guy who said the Yankees are still “really f-ing good” despite not making the playoffs thinks that Yamamoto will be in the Bronx.

The Yankees need starting pitching. The Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas experiments went horribly wrong. Outside of Gerrit Cole, the Yankees don’t have a lockdown guy in the rotation. There’s a chance of Jordan Montgomery returning, but it wouldn’t be as big of a move as Yamamoto would be.

Between Yamamoto and Shohei Ohtani, the bidding wars this offseason are going to be historic. Between the bad contracts and dysfunction, I don’t think the Yankees will be able to compete for these top superstars.

The Mets are going to be all over Yamamoto with their high payroll. With former Bloomberg CEO Scott Havens joining Steve Cohen on the business side, we may see the Mets become even more aggressive.

The Red Sox are going to be heavily in the mix, and it sounds like Boston could be the perfect fit for Yamamoto.

Wherever the star pitcher ends up, my money isn’t on the team in pinstripes. Props to them for going outside the box and saving his number, but it’ll be an embarrassing story if the Yankees don’t sign him.
