Jimmy Garoppolo Admits That Trey Lance Replacing Him Was On His Mind All Season

Ever since the San Francisco 49ers gave up multiple first-round picks to move up in the 2021 NFL Draft and pick Trey Lance, it seemed like the writing on the wall was obvious that Jimmy Garoppolo had a short leash. The veteran quarterback acknowledged that and admitted that he was looking over his shoulder all season.

According to the New York Post, this is what Jimmy Garoppolo had to say about the uncertainty around his job.

It’s always in the back of your mind. It has been in mine, really, the whole season. I knew what type of season it was, knew everything that was going on behind the scenes and what-not. It was a little different.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been a good quarterback for the 49ers, but when Trey Lance is taken as high as he was, the footsteps get louder and louder with each missed throw. For the most part, Jimmy Garoppolo won’t make many big plays on his own, but he won’t make many brutal mistakes. When Garoppolo struggled this season, it was due to missed throws, head-scratching decisions, and an inability to offset those with big plays. The chants got louder and louder for Trey Lance, but when he did play it was clear he wasn’t quite ready yet.

This postseason could be Jimmy Garoppolo’s last game as a 49er before Trey Lance gets the keys to the kingdom. Garoppolo has been playing well down the stretch of the regular season, and gives the 49ers a good chance to upset the Cowboys this weekend.
