Jared Verse: A Reminder Bench Press Numbers Matters

Jared Verse is legit. I think we learned that pretty quickly as the former Florida State product immediately became a problem right away as a rookie. The Rams got a good one and there’s no question about it.

I think it’s important to reflect on the draft class because there are always lessons to be learned. Verse in a redraft setting probably goes in the top 10 after the rookie season he just had. If you read my draft profile on him, it’s not that I was low on him but I should have been higher. We all should have been higher.

Again, it’s not like I hated the guy coming out. I picked him for the Falcons during the NFL Mock Draft Simulator series. I’d argue the draft I put together for them was a hell of a lot smarter than what they actually did but that’s a story for another day.

This is about team building. This is about evaluating talent. Not that this is a new lesson to be learned but it should be a constant reminder that power trumps all when it comes to pass rushers. You don’t want to build a team full of swimmers. You need guys who can win with power.

Verse ripped out 31 reps on the bench press at the Combine. I should have made him a top-10 overall player right there and then but I didn’t because I didn’t view him as overly twitchy. That was a mistake on my part. By the way, those 31 reps were a position high by a mile.

The bench press doesn’t mean everything but often times it indicates work ethic and you can’t put a value on that. Verse clearly cares and is wired differently. The dude is an animal in the power department.

By the way, no other NFL Draft analyst will do what I just did. I have no problem exposing myself. The only difference is, when I miss, it’s by centimeters. When the mainstream community misses, it’s by miles. Make Vendetta Sports Media your home for all NFL Draft coverage this offseason. You won’t find better.
