I recently put together a wishlist for the Golden Knights to consider during the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. It’s a list of four names that could really boost the forward group in Vegas. However, there is one name that feels like more pipedream than reality but it’s certainly worth a phone call if you’re the VGK front office. Is there any chance for a reunion with Alex Tuch?
You can’t put anything past the Sabres right now. The fact that they’re even open to trading Dylan Cozens tells you everything you need to know. Kevyn Adams is a dead man walking and everything could be on the table as he tries to save his job while tanking the franchise at the same time.
A big reason why the Sabres wanted Tuch in the original Eichel trade was because he represented a player who wanted to be there. Tuch, 28, is from Syracuse, New York, and grew up a Sabres fan. His childhood dream was to play for Buffalo. The only problem is that in the years that have transpired, the Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup and the Sabres still haven’t made the playoffs. Sabres fan or not, being stuck in Buffalo given what the franchise is going through during the prime of your career has to be incredibly frustrating.
Tuch is under contract through the 2025-26 NHL Season while carrying a reasonable $4.75 million AAV. He’s likely going to get a sizeable raise on his next deal. This is the real question. Do the Sabres want to lock themselves into an older player while they’re still very much in rebuild mode? Wouldn’t it make some sense to sell off Tuch for assets and truly build around the young players like Rasmus Dahlin, Dylan Cozens, Owen Power, Tage Thompson, and JJ Peterka?
The Golden Knights have one clear need heading into the deadline. Find a winger who can put the puck in the back of the net. Tuch slides in perfectly on the right side with Mark Stone, Victor Olofsson, and Keegan Kolesar as the other wingers. He’s three years removed from a 36 goal season and hasn’t really come close to that mark since. Playing with other good players in Vegas could get him back to that place.
I’m calling it a long shot since I highly doubt Adams would just give Tuch back to Vegas but I don’t think you can rule anything out with the Sabres. It’s a pathway worth exploring if you’re Kelly McCrimmon. One more scoring winger could be the exact thing to propel the VGK to another Stanley Cup.
