Jared Carrabis Bolts Barstool Sports For Draft Kings
We had a feeling this was coming. Jared Carrabis quietly was on shaky ground at Barstool. Erika Nardini blasted Carrabis in the media and had his contract negotiations become very public. Carrabis is now on his way to Draft Kings after failing to reach an extension with Barstool.
“Earlier this week, internet sleuths noticed that Carrabis removed Barstool from his Twitter bio, and that his baseball podcast, “Section 10,” was no longer on Barstool’s website.
With Barstool as something of an ongoing, surreal reality program, Carrabis’ contract negotiations played out in public last year. Barstool CEO Erika Nardini fielded lobbying pitches from podcaster Kirk Minihane on Carrabis’ behalf, with nothing ultimately getting resolved at the time.
“Making money matters here now not 10 years down the road,” Portnoy said. “I told him that he should take that offer. I’ll miss him though. But that is our model. Build stars from the ground up and then replace them if they get mega deals.”
Not sure I get the approach by Barstool. Carrabis carries their baseball team. Hubbs has no juice and really only gets clicks because he’s their Yankees guy. Carrabis is a self-built man. Dallas Braden doesn’t really have value without him. Starting Nine and Section 10 both have big followings. Carrabis is so respected that he hosts a show with David Ortiz. Not something that can be easily replaced.
Nardini deserves blame too. Recently she talked about why Barstool is paying for certain people. This is one they should have figured out a way to keep. It also doesn’t help that Portnoy is never around anymore and spends most of his time in Miami.
Draft Kings likely made an aggressive offer to reel in Carrabis. He’s been with the company since 2014 and likely didn’t want to leave. Then again, with Barstool’s offices being stuck in New York, Carrabis maybe saw greener pastures elsewhere. It’s no secret that he prefers to be in Boston which makes sense given the fact that he covers the Red Sox primarily.
Draft Kings is adding to their content team. That’s not a secret. They also recently have added content from both Mike Golic Sr. and Mike Golic Jr. Except Draft Kings will learn really quickly that nobody cares about either Golic.
