Giving The Bag To Cody Bellinger Would Be An Egregious Mistake

Every single year without fail there is a big free agent signing in baseball that becomes an egregious contract overnight. Last year it was Carlos Rodon and you’re welcome if you were smart enough to heed my warning. This year there is another obvious candidate that I can see coming from a mile away. Any team that gives Cody Bellinger the brinks truck this offseason will immediately regret it. Mark my words on this one.

Bellinger, 28, signed a one-year prove it deal last offseason. Give Bellinger credit. He came through and really played well with the Cubs. The Scottsdale, Arizona native slashed .307/.356/.525 with an OPS+ of 133. Belinger also hit 26 homers, stole 20 bags, and was a 4.4 WAR player.

The problem is people have totally overreacted to one season where Bellinger was fighting for his career. There was a three year stretch where Bellinger’s swing was totally broken. Scott Boras can tell you lies about how he was hurt, but it’s simply not true. Unless he’s trying to tell you that the guy was hurt for three consecutive seasons, which feels ridiculous.

Prior to joining the Cubs, Bellinger hit .202 during his final three years with the Dodgers. That’s including a 44 OPS+ season in 2021. What happens when you give this guy endless amounts of money and he reverts back to this form? Isn’t that asking to get ripped off in free agency? Isn’t the point of free agency eliminating risk? Especially with the attitude Bellinger has. Guy is a big time cry baby and always has been.

Any team that pays Bellinger the bag this offseason is insane. It’s a non-starter for any team that’s actually intelligent. You don’t invest high money in mechanically flawed players and that’s exactly what Bellinger. Just like Rodon, I will laugh when the team that overpays for Bellinger gets burned.
