Carlos Rodon Contract A Gross Overpay By Yankees
I’m so happy we got this on the record before it happened. Whichever team spent in excess of $100 million on Carlos Rodon this offseason will live to regret it. Turns out that team was the New York Yankees after they dropped $162 million over six years for Rodon. Just remember Yankee fans, I said this before your team signed him.
I know what the numbers are. I’m not an idiot. I just ask you to take them into context. $27 million AAV with a no-trade clause. Mark my words, Brian Cashman will regret this deal.
There are too many red flags here to even consider handing this contract out. The injury history is real. 2022 is the only year of his career that Rodon made 30 starts or more. Rodon, 30, has five years that he failed to make 25 starts. I’m not going to sit here and predict injuries but if Rodon goes on the shelf again, I don’t want to hear it.
Also, keep in mind, the Giants are really good at reinventing guys. It’s a tough ballpark to hit homers in. With the Giants in 2021 and 2022, Rodon sported ERA’s of 2.37 and 2.88 respectively. Prior to that, it’s hard to even find a good year Rodon produced with Chicago. Two years ago this guy had an ERA of 8.22 in a limited sample size.
Yes, I get that the Yankees wanted a hard throwing lefty starter. I understand why Cashman made this move. This is just not an investment I would have made. Especially when the Dodgers are out here grabbing Noah Syndergaard for $13 million. It’s the same thing I said to the diamond about Frankie Montas and was proven right. Yankee Stadium is a different animal. It’s a tee ballpark. He’s going to give up homers and the fans aren’t going to like it.
Outside of two really good prove it years with the Giants, Rodon is far from an elite pitcher. New York is buying at absolute peak value and are about to get burned in a big way. Mark my words.
