Cody Bellinger was a semi-surprise non-tendered this offseason by the Dodgers. If you have been reading this site for a while, you know that team Trey has nailed this from the start. Bellinger is very overrated and LA should have traded him years ago. Did anyone envision that Bellinger would have to settle for a one year deal when he hit free agency? Because that’s exactly what happened.
Bellinger has signed a one-year prove it deal with the Cubs. The former Dodger is going to get paid pretty well all things consider as Chicago is giving him $17.5 million for the 2023 MLB Season.
Jeff Passan at ESPN was the first to report the news:
Bellinger, 27, is hitting free agency at a really young age with a chance to cash in again. If that’s going to happen, Bellinger has to significantly outperform his 2022 slash line (.210/.265/.389). That’s including an OPS+ of 78 and 150 strikeouts. Bellinger can still run and play defense but the bat is totally gone. Something we have been tracking for a long time now.
Bellinger is going to get plenty of opportunities with the Cubs. This is a Chicago team that won 74 games a year ago and are still very much in the rebuild process. With the hopes of turning the corner, Bellinger will need to post a rebound season to help the Cubs take a step forward in 2023.
