Ian Rapoport doesn’t think Caleb Williams is a franchise quarterback

After it was reported that Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was out for the season, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport took the time to take a shot at future first-round quarterback Caleb Williams.

The spotlight has been around injuries in the NFL this season, while in college football, all eyes are on USC star quarterback Caleb Williams.

After finishing last season as the Heisman trophy winner, expectations were through the roof for the Washington, D.C. native. Well, Williams has had his ups and downs this season, losing five out of his last six games. In his most recent loss against rival UCLA, Williams chose not to speak to the media, and Rapoport called him out for it.

It was after Burrow learned he was out for the season that Rapoport had a little fun taking shots at Williams, essentially saying he doesn’t believe he is a franchise quarterback.

Joe Burrow learned his season was over on Friday, understood his responsibility, and went out and held a news conference,” he tweeted. “The job of a QB and face of the franchise.”

Rapoport may be right here, Williams has shown his immaturity as a person on and off the field, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t an incredible talent. Last year, people were saying he is a generational talent, and now they’re switching up after one season that wasn’t his fault? Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Williams and the rest of the USC offense scored 40-plus points in eight of their 12 games this season while still finishing 7-5. Now tell me that’s his fault. It’s not.

Only months ago, NFL scouts were already calling C.J. Stroud a bust before he got drafted and stepped onto an NFL field. Now look at him. He has a smart head on his shoulders and is leading the Houston Texans to a potential playoff berth–an incredible feat for the rookie quarterback.

Rapoport is wrong here. Williams not speaking to the media one time doesn’t mean he’s not a franchise quarterback. Every player has shown frustration in their sport. In 2011, when Ryan Fitzpatrick defeated Tom Brady when he was with Buffalo, Brady didn’t even shake his hand after the game. But since it’s Brady, the story goes nowhere.

It’s a double standard. Ian, you’re wrong.
