The Dolphins Tried To Trade For Saquon Barkley

It’s been a rollercoaster today for Saquon Barkley in the news cycle so let me try to catch you up to speed the best I can.

The Giants running back agreed to a new contract with the team today. Barkley was hit with the franchise tag this offseason and wasn’t happy about it. Both parties found a middle ground today and put some fancy new incentives into the deal.

We then found out that the Giants actually tried to trade Barkley. We also now know one of the teams that made an offer. By the title, you can probably guess by now that it’s the Dolphins.

VIA Ryan Dunleavy at the New York Post:

“In fact, the Giants turned down two offers called into them by teams who since have been shown to be in the market for other top running backs, including the Dolphins, league sources said.”

Barkley has also commented on the situation using the hat emojis. If you’re not with the kids, it’s a fancy way of calling Mike Florio a liar.

Let’s try to put the rest of the puzzle pieces together. Barkley can say that’s cap all he wants. Conventional wisdom suggests that the Dolphins made a lowball offer that wasn’t enticing enough to make the Giants bite. That’s the most likely scenario. Miami has been aggressive this offseason building a winner. We’re talking about the same team that just traded a third round pick for Jalen Ramsey. Miami probably made the same type of offer but it wasn’t enough for the Giants.

Miami is still in the hunt for a back and could end up signing Dalvin Cook instead. Using cap space to sign Cook rather than give up a high level draft pick for Saquon Barkley is probably the right move anyway.

Food for thought. Cook is also a Miami native. Barkley is from the northeast. It’s probably better for all parties involved that Barkley stayed with the Giants. That is assuming Cook does land with Miami.
