Did The Giants Actually Try To Trade Saquon Barkley?
I have said for a long time now that the smartest thing the Giants could do is trade Saquon Barkley. Well, it turns out that they really tried. Since the news has trickled in over the new deal that Barkley signed, it turns out that the Giants may have tried to trade him while he was on the franchise tag.
I’m not sure Mike Florio counts as a real reporter but he had some interesting things to say about the possibility that Barkley could have been dealt this offseason.
“Per multiple sources, the Giants called a dozen teams in an effort to find a potential trade partner, back in the March/April time frame. The calls came at the request of Barkley’s representation.”
This is just a pure hypothetical, at this point, but Garrett did do a trade destinations post on Barkley not too long ago. A deal to Buffalo or Kansas City prior to this season would have been really fun. Realistically, those teams are probably fine with their much cheaper options. Who knows if the Giants even called either of those teams.
Nevertheless, a compromise has been found. Barkley has incentives in his contract that he can earn more money on this new deal. For those details, Jack Sabin has a story you can read here that goes over all of them. It will surprise you how light the incentives are given the way Barkley threatened to sit out the season.
