Report: Jalen Ramsey trade to Dolphins set to take place Wednesday

There has been a lot of speculation since the season ended surrounding what the Rams will do about Jalen Ramsey.

The team is now feeling some of the ramifications of their blockbuster trades and free agent signings over the last few years. Accordingly, trade rumors have been circulating for over a month around the three-time All-Pro defensive back. The Miami Dolphins are now officially the team expected to acquire Jalen Ramsey when free agency begins on Wednesday.

The terms of the deal are currently believed to be for a 2023 third round pick and Dolphins tight end Hunter Long. The idea of the secondary in Miami including two All-Pros like Xavien Howard and now Ramsey is crazy.

The Miami Dolphins turned a lot of heads with the success they displayed in 2022. They already have one of the league’s best and most consistent defensive backs in Howard. The two-time NFL interceptions leader and 2020 first team All-Pro is highly respected across the league. The Dolphins are hoping that the addition of Ramsey alongside Howard will allow them to take the next step as a team.

Miami recently released Byron Jones after he did not work out as well as they had hoped. They wasted no time filling the void of his loss by signing Ramsey. The $13.6 million they saved from releasing Jones will likely also contribute to the $25 million Ramsey will be due in 2023.

Why Los Angeles had to move on from Ramsey

The Rams traded a first-round pick to acquire Ramsey midway through the 2019 season from Jacksonville.

Ramsey spent the last three and a half seasons in Los Angeles, proving to be a vital piece of the defense and team. Earning All-Pro accolades and a victory in Super Bowl 57. Ramsey signed a five-year contract extension worth up to $100 million with the Rams before the 2020 season. The salary cap hit from his contract would cost the Rams over $25 million in 2023.

After finishing with a 5-12 record last season, the beginning of a turnover in players has begun in Los Angeles. A player of Jalen Ramsey’s caliber being acquired for a third-round pick is a steal for Miami.
