In a recent Instagram post, Conor McGregor revealed that the UFC has offered him a coaching role on its television show “The Ultimate Fighter” (TUF). More importantly, the UFC superstar is interested in appearing on the show, for what would be his second time.
“This is a snap from the original ultimate fighter house,” McGregor said on Instagram. “Where I coached vs. Urijah Faber. This photo was just before the show tho. It was right before I won my first world title beating Urijah teammate Chad Mendes around. I then went on to coach the famous fight show straight after the fight. With a big black eye and a gash, my tricolor, and my new and first ever UFC gold belt, I waltzed into the notorious fight gym in Las Vegas. The slickest suits and shouts the show had ever seen before. On top of the silverware. And I coached my team to victory. Crazy. Some journey. I have just been offered to coach this role again. I like it. It is full immersion which is needed. I see fighters lining up. I know whats ahead I been ready motherfuckers. #StayReady”

In McGregor’s first season of TUF, “The Ultimate Fighter 22,” he coached against Faber in what ended up being one of the show’s best seasons. It featured McGregor talking trash to Faber, T.J. Dillashaw, Cody Garbrandt and more.
With TUF being far from its glory days, having McGregor coach the next season may help revive the show. If “The Notorious” cannot do it, nobody can.
McGregor mentioned in his Instagram post that coaching the show may also help him immerse himself into his next fight camp. I would not predict that TUF will eliminate the distractions in McGregor’s life and help him focus on fighting; however, based on his most recent string of performances, it is worth a shot.
This still leaves us with a lot of questions. Who is McGregor going to coach against? Will he fight the person that he coaches against? Is the UFC going to matchmake McGregor for a good fight, or a good season of TUF? It is hard to answer any of these questions.
Let’s be honest, if McGregor is going to coach on TUF he better fight the opposing coach. If he doesn’t, it kind of defeats the purpose of the show.
Now, there are some interesting options for potential fighters to coach against McGregor.
At the moment, it feels like the most obvious fight for McGregor is Michael Chandler. That would certainly provide an interesting season. Although, if the UFC can somehow get business done with Nate Diaz, who is currently a free agent, they may be looking at one of the most successful TUF seasons of TUF.
If the UFC wants to get really crazy with the next season of tough, they have an opportunity. The organization may opt to book McGregor against a trash-talking welterweight like Jorge Masvidal or Colby Covington. While those fights do not make much sense, they would make good TV which makes them a possibility.
